Binturongs

Known also as bearcats, these unusual Asian mammals are related to neither bears nor cats. With cat-like whiskers and a long prehensile tail, and a stocky bear-like body covered in shaggy black fur, however, it’s easy to see where the name comes from!

Binturongs are happiest in the treetops, where they move from branch to branch using their tail like an extra hand. However, they’re also able to swim fairly well. These shy creatures creep through the tropical rainforests of south-east Asia.

They usually live either on their own or in small family groups. Binturong have between one and three babies at a time.
