About the Prairie Dogs

Prairie dogs are ground living squirrels; this species has a brown body and a distinctive black tail.

Habitat and Distribution

Black-tailed prairie dogs are found in the grasslands of North America’s Great Plains.

Family Information

Prairie dogs live in groups called coteries; these consist of one male, several females and their young. Lots of coteries together are called towns – these have been known to consist of over one million prairie dogs! They have one litter of up to eight young each year.
