Shetland Ponies
Equus caballus caballus Shetland
Shetland ponies are small horses that can measure up to 1.07m in height. Their hair can be black, white, brown or grey. Shetland ponies are the strongest horse breed compared to their size and can pull twice their own weight. (Please note, our ponies move out of their pens from 5pm BST and 4pm GMT into fields where they graze overnight).
Shetland Ponies originate from the Shetland Islands. They are very hardy and can live on very rough grazing, they eat grass, hay and other plants.
Ponies naturally live in groups; a herd of ponies is called a string. Shetland ponies can live for up to 30 years.
